In Excel, you can convert a spreadsheet to a tab delimited text file by using the “Convert to Tab” button in the “File” menu. This will create a text file with the following contents: Name Date Time Name Date Time excel.xlsx excel.txt

One problem that occurs in desktop publishing is being able to convert data from one program to another.  This is where converting data into a text or Tab Delimited file comes in handy.  You will lose color and font formatting, but you will have the proper data arranged in columns and rows that will make it much easier to manipulate in another program.

Click the Office Button and choose Save As Other Formats.

Now just select the save as type menu item Text (Tab delimited) (*.txt) and a location

The resulting text file can then be opened and used in basically any office or desktop publishing application you choose.
